1.6 Management of waste from

small-scale nuclear activities

1.6.1 Management of waste from non-BNI

nuclear activities

The issues and implications

Theuseof unsealed sources innuclearmedicine, biomedical

or industrial research creates solid and liquidwaste: small

laboratory equipment used to prepare sources, medical

equipment used for administration, residues of food eaten

by patients who have received diagnostic or therapeutic

doses, etc. Radioactive liquideffluents alsocome fromsource

preparation as well as from the patients who eliminate

the radioactivity administered to themby natural routes.

The diversity of waste fromsmall-scale nuclear activities,

the large number of establishments producing it and the

radiation protection issues involved have led the public

authorities to regulate the management of the waste

generated by these activities.

Management of disused sealed sources

considered as waste

Sealed sources are used for medical, industrial, research

and veterinary applications (see chapters 9 and10).When

they reach endof life, and if their suppliers donot envisage

their reuse in any way, they are considered radioactive

waste and must be managed as such.
